Full bodied and very supple, this is an exceptional Chardonnay at the price. It is fruity and floral in character (apple, orange blossom), with overtones of roasted nut, toast, and lemon peel. Long finish. Easily, the best Chardonnay yet from Atlas Peak.
In the cool mountain climate at the Atlas Peak estate vineyards, the Chardonnay is harvested late in the season, even after the Carneros Region, generally considered to be Napa Valley's coolest growing region. This long, cool growing season creates intensely flavored fruit, which holds its acidity very well. The wine is 100% barrel fermented, and 70-80% of the wine is softened by malolactic fermentation. The firm acid structure of the Atlas Peak fruit allows the wine to maintain an appealing crisp character while benefiting from the round, buttery effects of malolactic. Aging takes place on the lees in new to 2-year-old French oak barrels for about 9 months.
