Description of Atlas Peak Vineyards Reserve Sangiovese
Dense, garnet hue. Complex nose of oak, black cherry and red raspberry. Soft, creamy mouth-feel, with bright cherry and raspberry flavors graced by full tannins. Long, generous finish echoing cherry, mocha and lasting wood impressions.
The grapes for our Reserve Sangiovese are selected from two hillside vineyard blocks planted with warm Southwesterly exposures with elevations above 1,600 feet. Yields are less than 4 pounds per vine. The wine is barrel fermented in 2000-gallon wood tanks, then aged 15 months in a combination of new to four-year-old 60-gallon François Fréres French oak barrels. This limited production wine is concentrated with ripe plum, black cherry and blackberry flavors accentuated by a complex layering of oak and smoke spice character. The low-yielding vineyard blocks used for this reserve wine add a rich dimension and a long finish to the wine.
